Procura di Brindisi: Archiviazione di violenza sessuale per Paul Haggis

Il respected director and screenwriter from Canada, Paul Haggis, appears to have come to the end of his alleged sexual assault investigation. The enquiry stemmed from an event that took place in 2022, while he was visiting Ostuni for the “Allora Fest”.

Paul Haggis and the sexual assault accusation: The saga unfolds

Haggis, an award-winning filmmaker, has been exonerated by the Prosecutor’s Office in Brindisi from all accusations laid against him by the alleged victim, a young woman of English descent. In the absence of sufficient evidence, investigators Livia Orlando and Antonio Negro decided that there wasn’t a strong enough case for a criminal trial for sexual assault.

The complainant claimed that the abuse had been ongoing for three days, a claim that was found to lack concrete evidence. As a result, the encounters were deemed to have been consensual.

Paul Haggis’s ordeal with the alleged accusation of sexual assault

According to a previous statement by the local police, after two days of alleged “non-consensual relations,” Haggis dropped the woman at the Papola Casale airport in Brindisi early on a Friday morning. It was reported that the woman was in a fragile physical and psychological state at that time.

Airport personnel and border police found the young woman in a “confused state” and offered her support and an opportunity to report her experience at their office.

Subsequently, she was taken to a hospital for treatment under a protocol used in Italy for victims of violence against women and finally reported the incident to law enforcement authorities.

Paul Haggis prepared to face the accusations, as noted by his lawyer Priya Chaudhry in an email exchange with the New York Times:

“He is entirely innocent and is fully prepared to cooperate with the authorities so that the truth can come out sooner.”
